Main South Road, Stage 1
Traffic changes
To make way for the construction of the lowered motorway and new bridges at Flinders Drive, Sturt Road, Mimosa Terrace/Sutton Road and Tonsley Boulevard, the first stage of a major traffic switch will come into effect at 6am on Monday 16 October. The first stage will occur between the Southern Expressway and Lincoln Road, Bedford Park and will involve:
- Moving traffic to
newly constructed Main South Road surface roads and;
- The realignment of
Main South Road intersections with the Southern Expressway, Flinders Drive and
Sturt Road.
From 7pm on Friday 13 October, preliminary works will occur in preparation for the switch. This work includes the installation of traffic signals in temporary locations, relocation of bus stops, removal of traffic islands and kerbs, reconfiguration of intersections and asphalting new lanes.
Four lanes of traffic will be provided for northbound and southbound traffic and Main South Road, Flinders Drive and Sturt Road will remain open at all times. All turning movements will remain available at the Flinders Drive and Sturt Road intersections.
Please take extra care when travelling to and from university as these traffic changes take place - allow additional travel time and observe all speed and lane restrictions. Traffic controllers and signage will be in place.
Pedestrian and cyclist access
Access for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained – please stay safe and ensure you use the designated pedestrian crossings and cycle lanes as shown on the map in the information sheet. The on-road cycle lane south bound on Main South Road will be closed between Flinders Drive and Franklin Avenue and detoured via Wentworth Avenue.
South Road bus stops
Bus stops along Main South Road will be relocated to the new surface roads and a number of stops will be permanently relocated - check the information sheet and visit Adelaide Metro for full details and more information.
Local access
Some local access to and from Bedford Park north and south will be affected by these traffic arrangements. For full details view the information sheet or call 1300 759 334.
Stage 2
More information about the second stage of the traffic switch between Ayliffes Road and Tonsley Boulevard will be available in the coming months.
