Divided we fall: Finding a shared vision for South Australia’s economic transformation
The former Governor of South Australia, Rear Admiral the Honourable Kevin Scarce AC CSC RAN (Rtd) will deliver the University’s annual Investigator Lecture on Monday 24 November 2014.
The Shaping the Future of South Australia program was initiated at a Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA) Trustees meeting in November 2013, where Rear Admiral Scarce called upon CEDA members to help address the current challenges facing South Australia. The final report was presented in August 2014 and contained a series of practical actions to transform the State’s economy for the 21st Century.
This important lecture focuses on what it will take for South Australia to meet the challenges of an uncertain economic future.
Flinders University alumnus, Mr Matt Johnson exemplifies the vision, resolve and initiative required for a leader in South Australia. Accordingly, he will be presented with a Distinguished Alumni Award recognising his professional achievements and significant service to the university and state of South Australia. Matt has recently returned to Adelaide from a posting as Deputy Agent-General in London and is currently Executive Director, Investment, Trade and Strategic Projects in the Department of State Development.

Born in Adelaide, South Australia in 1952, Kevin Scarce spent his early childhood in Woomera and attended Elizabeth East Primary School and Elizabeth High School. Joining the Navy in 1968, he served during the Vietnam War on the troop transport HMAS Sydney.
After the war, Kevin Scarce's naval career specialised in military logistics and procurement, rising to the rank of Rear Admiral and head of Maritime Systems at the Defence Materiel Organisation. He also served as the commander of the Navy’s premier training establishment, HMAS Cerberus, between 1995 and 1997. After retiring from the Navy, he became head of the South Australian Government's Defence Unit, and led a team that was responsible for the Air Warfare Destroyer being built in South Australia. Rear Admiral Scarce was the 34th Governor of South Australia, serving from August 2007 to August 2014.
The Investigator Lecture is a major public event on the University’s calendar and is named after Matthew Flinders’ ship The Investigator. The lecture was first given in 1979.
