Online Exam Invigilation: Detailed Technical Requirements

If you're taking an online invigilated exam, it's important that you check the minimum technical requirements and make sure that your devices and internet connection will be suitable to use in your final exam.

Device requirements

  • A laptop or desktop computer with a single screen setup. Mobile devices, tablets, and hybrid devices are not supported. Multiple screens are not allowed. Please see additional details of operating system requirements below.
  • A working microphone, either inbuilt in your laptop or computer, or a standalone microphone that you can plug into your computer (e.g by USB). A combined microphone/earphones headset is not allowed. See examples of suitable standalone mics
  • A working webcam. You need to scan your exam work space with your webcam, which means you must to be able to manoeuvre it to give a full view of the room.
    • If you are using a PC: This could be the inbuilt webcam in your laptop or computer, or standalone device you can plug in.
    • if you are using a Mac: You must use the inbuilt webcam. External cameras are not supported on Mac devices.

Internet requirements

Your internet must be reliable and capable of supporting stable connections and video streaming. The minimum upload and download speed you need is 300 kilobits per second (kbps), or 0.3 megabits per second (mbps).

There are plenty of online tools that help you test your internet connection. Your internet service provider may offer this; check their website. A generic tool you may find useful is speedtest.net. Or, Google to find a tool that works for you.
